​Camping, the average expense of travelers is increasing: 1,432 euros in 2023

The interest in outdoor tourism is growing among Italian and foreign tourists, with a significant increase in advance bookings in 2023. According to an analysis conducted by Campeggi.com in the first four months of this year, compared to same period in 2022, there was a 27% increase in users, 35% in searches by Italian travelers and 139% in bookings for the months of June, July and August.

The desire for outdoor holidays in Italy is also infecting foreign tourists, especially Germans (+58% compared to 2022), Poles (+69%), Czechs (+44%), Danes (+35%) and Dutch (+18%). Outdoor holidays are particularly chosen by families or groups of friends (56%) and couples (34%). Most of these (34%) have booked a 7-night stay in Italian campsites and villages, while 17% have already booked for 14 nights, 15% for 2-4 nights and 6% for 10 nights. The most sought-after accommodations are holiday villages, sought after by 64% of users, followed by glamping (16%), traditional camping (12%) and pitches for caravans (8%).

The average expenditure of travelers is on the rise and stands at 1,432 euros. As far as services are concerned, users look for ‘pet-friendly’ structures that accept animals (26%), locations close to the sea (18%) and with direct access to the beach (9%). The searches for structures suitable for families represent 13% of the total, while those for centers with swimming pools reach 8%. Puglia leads the ranking of the ten most sought-after destinations by Italians, with 22% of total searches, two positions higher than in 2022. Followed by Tuscany (15%), which has lost one position, and Sardinia (10% ), who earned one.

Other popular destinations are Veneto, Lazio, Abruzzo, Marche, Sicily, Emilia-Romagna and Liguria. As for foreign tourists, their favorite destinations are Veneto (34% of searches), Trentino-Alto Adige (9%) and Sardinia (8%). Followed by Lombardy, Liguria, Piedmont, Tuscany, Sicily, Campania and Calabria.
